What Is Intraoperative Monitoring?

Intraoperative Neurophysiologic Monitoring (IONM) is a technique that is directly aimed at reducing the risk of neurological deficits after surgeries that impact the nervous system. IONM measures electrical outputs from the nervous system during surgery and offers an opportunity to detect injuries before they can cause neurological deficits. Introduction of IONM has reduced the risk of debilitating deficits such as muscle weakness, paralysis, hearing loss, and loss of other normal body functions. IONM is performed by an AMI technologist supervised by a Neurologist who is giving real-time feedback. During the procedure, the lead IONM Neurologist is the only person qualified to make interpretations of recorded information and in turn will provide direction to the surgeon via the technologist.
